Is there a time limit for making changes to my child's declaration of birth? |
Any change to the essential information appearing on a child's declaration of birth must be made no later than the 30th day after the child's birth. To change the child's family name or given name after the 30-day period, the parents must apply and pay for a change of name.

Is my child automatically covered by Québec's prescription drug insurance plan? |
Once the Régie de l'assurance-maladie du Québec has confirmed a child's eligibility for the public health insurance plan, it is up to the parents to make sure that the child is covered by a prescription drug insurance plan. Parents who have private group insurance with basic prescription drug coverage must have their child included under the plan. If the parents are covered under the public prescription drug insurance plan administered by the Régie, their child will automatically be registered under the public plan.

Is my child's birth certificate issued automatically at birth? |
No, birth certificates are not issued automatically. Parents must apply for them and pay a fee of $15. It is best not to delay in obtaining a birth certificate for your child, as proof of birth is required in many situations. To apply, contact the Directeur de l'état civil

What is the refundable tax credit for child assistance? |
This credit is a recently introduced measure that is administered by the Régie des rentes du Québec and has two components: - The child assistance payment which replaced the family allowance
- The supplement for handicapped children which replaced the benefit for handicapped children
The tax credit for child assistance also replaces: - the non-refundable tax credit respecting dependent children
- the tax reduction for families
The Régie makes child assistance and supplement for handicapped children payments (if applicable), 4 times a year: in January, April, July and October. Payments are made on the first working day of those months.
If you would like to receive your payments every month, you must apply to the Régie.
