Adoption by a relative
To adopt the child of a relative, you must be the grandparent, uncle, aunt, brother or sister of the child. The child’s parents or tutor must consent to the adoption.
Adoption by a spouse
To adopt your spouse’s child, you must have been married or living together for at least three years. In this situation, adoption does not end the filiation between the child and his or her biological parents. The former spouse who is the child’s biological parent must also agree to the adoption, if applicable.
