Paternity: acknowledgment, contestation and denial

Responsibility : Ministère de la Justice

Acknowledgment
Filiation may be proven by the act of birth, possession of status or the presumption of paternity. If it cannot be proven by any of these means, it can be established by voluntary acknowledgment of the father, the mother or both, that they are the child's parent(s).

Contestation and denial
To establish the true paternity of her child, the mother may contest the paternity of the presumed father in the year that follows the child's birth. A presumed father may also deny his paternity in the year after he becomes aware of the child's birth.
