Recording births that were registered outside Québec

Responsibility : Directeur de l’état civil

If you are a Québec resident and you gave birth to your child outside Québec, you may request that the Directeur de l’état civil (DEC) record the birth in the Québec register of civil status.

To have an event registered
Submit the required documents to the Directeur de l'état civil, along with a letter of explanation.

Required documents

  • The original act of birth, bearing the stamp of the body that registered the child

  • Two documents showing your address (driver's licence; lease; electricity, phone or tax bill, etc.)

Note
Regardless of whether the DEC decides to record the juridical or civil status event that occurred outside Québec, your original documents will be returned to you.
