Newborn blood screening

Responsibility : Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux

On the birth of your child, a blood sample will be taken from the child’s heel to screen for tyrosinemia, phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism.

The sample allows for early recognition of affected children and prompt commencement of the appropriate medical treatment.

Blood samples are taken by:

  • hospital obstetrical units, preferably before the newborn child goes home;

  • midwives, in the case of children born in a birthing house.
